So, today we went up to Baltimore to see the "once in a life time" map exhibit. It was pretty cool to tell you the truth. We got to see lots of new maps, as well as some favorties. I thought it was great how we got to see actual maps that we've seen in books throughout some of our classes. Like the famous Cholera Map. I personally really enjoyed someof the oriental maps. The amount of detail and creativity put into those maps is amazing. There was also a map I got a kick out of. It was a map of the world, and it showed India being where Mexico really is. Just interesting to see a map to go along with what people such as Columbus really believed at the time. I also enjoyed the stone and stick maps. It's pretty cool that even before paper was in use, people were using what they had to portray a sense of direction and location.

I thought it was unfortunate that they wouldn't allow pictures to be taken of this amazing exhibit. Especially since these maps will probably never be gathered and put together for an exibit again. Or atleast during our lifetime? But, i'm not one to follow the rules! So, I did manage to get a snap shot of just a few maps. Don't tell anyone!! Haha, enjoy.

Lab 10 - Overlay

Here is my lab 10 assignment made in google earth. My parents gave me spending money to go on a "vacation" because I haven't been able to go anywhere because i'm always in school or at work to pay for school.

Lab 7 - Invasion of Russia part 2

Here is my second lab showing the German invasion of Russia. This part only involved making the shape tween. From August back to July it looks great, but from July back to June it doesn't go so well. I had trouble bringing it back to the begining. The line kept add points, getting all twisted around, then eventually the fill just disappeared. I'm toatlly frustrated with this portion of the lab and have given up. There has to be an easier way to do this!!

The direct link to your submission is: http://www.swfup.com/uploads/swf-169213.swf

The swfup page for your submission is: http://www.swfup.com/file/169213

Okay, so i tried something different. It wasn't too bad making, except making each guide line was very time consuming. Also, I attempted to use the pen to make my guidelines, but when I would test my movie, it would go forward, then back to the starting point instead of just stoping at the end point. Another issue I'm having is the text within my buttons. In Flash, the text looks fine, but when I publish it, the spacing isn't right. This illusion is an optical phenomenon known as the persistence of vision. It is the result of the eye’s retina retaining an image for about 1/12 of a second. When successive images are shown at a faster rate, the eye will blend them together with the retina retaining one image as the second is superimposed over it. This creates the illusion of movement and is the fundamental principle involved in film and television recording and reproduction. Sound movies have been traditionally projected at 24 frames per second or faster making the illusion of movement very smooth. (Gary Ferrington "Flipbook Animation" http://www.proscenia.net/pronews/randomlinks/filpbooks.html).

Maps represent spacial data including spacing, size, orientation and shape. Animated maps include these as well as duration, rate of change, order, display date, frequency and synchronization. The effectiveness of animation ultimately will depend on numerous factors including the symbology used, the level of interaction allowed, whether the user has expertise in the domain being mapped, and the user's past experience with animation. (Slocum et al).

Things to consider when creating an animation:

Duration: length of time a frame is displayed, depending on its length, can be either smooth or choppy.

Rate of change: Equals m/d, where m is the magnitude of change, d is the duration of each frame. The smoothness is a function of the rate of change.

Order: sequence in which the frames are presented.

Display date: the time some display change is indicated.

Frequancy: number of identifiable states per unit time.

Synchronization: temporal correspondence of two or more time series

http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/index_loop.php

How to apply in our class:
We all are just getting familiar with Flash and knowledge of using animation can be very useful. Flip book animation can be used to make your map more unique and get the attention of the audience. You can present change over time using animation which helps show spatial relationships.

Relevant websites:
Adobe website has step by step tutorial on how to create flip book animation in flash. This link can be very useful for the class this semester, since we are learning Flash from the begining!
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/designcenter/search.cfm?product=Flash&term=Flash&topic=Animation#target
This website also shows step by step how to apply animation to several applications that we have used in the class. There are sevearl examples how to do frame by frame animations, it even gives you an option to download the file in order to work through the tutorial:http://www.developingwebs.net/flash/

Other related links:
http://www.digicelinc.com/3D/3danimationJR2.htm
http://maps.unomaha.edu/mp/Articles/GISLIS/VisAnim.html
http://www.animationfactory.com/en/flash_animations.mc?cid=EB

Lab 1 - 2004 Tsunami: Before and After

Here is a before shot of Banda Aceh, Indonesia and then an after shot of the same location. You can find maps for just about anything on Earth as well other planets. You can also search their library database for research projects. There is also links for currents jobs among other links that will you will find useful.

AAG is another great site because it is the official Association of American Geographers website. Here you can find plenty of material to read on anything Geography. There are journals, books, and news articles. You can also search for jobs/careers on this site to.

Earth Week is my personal favorite out of these three websites. I like it because it has plenty on articles that deal with events occuring around the world. It is more involved with climate and environmental patterns. It is a website that is a little more fun, so you want to clink links and see what is happening.
